Amazon.com reported second-quarter 2026 net sales of $200.61 billion, up 20% year-over-year, with Amazon Web Services (AWS) revenue climbing 37% to $42.2 billion. Shares rose approximately 9% in after-hours trading on July 30, making Amazon one of two megacap technology winners alongside Microsoft in a week that exposed a growing divide between AI monetisers and AI spenders.

AWS Growth and the AI Workload Shift

AWS growth of 37% marked the segment's fastest expansion since 2021. Management attributed the acceleration to enterprise demand for GPU instances, custom AI chips including Trainium and Inferentia, and expanded data centre capacity. Amazon has committed roughly $200 billion in total 2026 capital expenditure, the largest absolute figure among the hyperscalers.

The company disclosed a contract backlog of approximately $496 billion, reflecting multi-year cloud commitments from enterprises migrating workloads and building AI applications. That figure matters for S&P 500 investors because AWS margins historically subsidise Amazon's lower-margin retail operations.

Capex vs. Cash Flow

Despite strong revenue, Amazon's free cash flow has come under pressure from data centre buildouts. Q1 2026 free cash flow fell roughly 95% quarter-over-quarter as construction spending accelerated. Investors accepted the trade-off in July because AWS growth confirmed that demand is real, not speculative.

Amazon competes directly with Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud for AI infrastructure contracts. All three depend on NVIDIA GPUs and, increasingly, Samsung and SK Hynix memory for high-bandwidth AI servers.

What It Means for the S&P 500

Amazon is a top-five S&P 500 constituent. Its earnings carry significant weight in index-level profit calculations. Goldman Sachs strategists estimate that hyperscaler capex could collectively exceed $670 billion in 2026, with roughly half of projected S&P 500 earnings growth linked to AI infrastructure spending.
