US spot bitcoin ETFs lost $643.3 million on Friday, the first trading day after the Binance hack, and gave back most of the money they had taken in during 2026. CoinDesk, citing SoSoValue, said it was the biggest single-day outflow since 25 June, when investors pulled $696.3 million. Before Friday the funds were sitting on a net inflow for the year of just over $1 billion. Friday removed 63.6% of that total. It was the 12th largest daily outflow since the funds began trading in January 2024, and it narrowly beat the 22 October outflow of $635.5 million.

BlackRock and Fidelity led the redemptions

BlackRock's IBIT led the day with $233.70 million out. Fidelity's FBTC lost $201.4 million. The Block put the week's bitcoin ETF outflow at $202.6 million and Friday's ether ETF outflow at $155.9 million, with $431.5 million leaving ether funds over the week. Sunday's Farside table, used in Sunday's market note, had the ether day at $155.7 million. Monday's price bounce is in today's price note.

Assets fell under $100 billion as US demand stayed soft

Bitfire Research told CoinDesk that Friday's outflow pulled total assets in the bitcoin ETFs below $100 billion, to $98.14 billion. The Coinbase premium, a gauge of US spot buying, stayed between minus 0.18% and minus 0.27%. The Crypto Fear and Greed Index softened into a 30 to 34 range. Nick Forster, founder of the options venue Derive, said the market was already under pressure and the $6.3 billion Binance hack added another layer of uncertainty. Traditional investors, he said, used the first session after the theft to cut risk. The customer-flow picture at the exchange is in today's business story.

Midterms, payrolls and an MSCI list are the next three tests

Bitfire named three dates that can move the funds from here. US midterm elections are on 3 November and can shape the regulatory outlook for the last two years of President Donald Trump's term. The October jobs report is on 6 November and can move Federal Reserve rate expectations. The same day, MSCI is due to publish a final list of companies caught by new rules for non-operating firms. The index provider has flagged Strategy and Metaplanet, two large corporate bitcoin holders, as possible exclusions. Passive funds that track those indexes would then have to sell the shares, which can limit how much more bitcoin those companies buy. CoinDesk showed Strategy shares near $130.49. The rate path is in the economy briefing. Track the flows on the markets desk.
