Fake Recovery Agents Target Key Coin Victims After UK Wind-Up

Fake crypto recovery agents targeting UK Key Coin Assets victims with Bitcoin invoices September 2026
The Official Receiver is liquidator. Anyone who cold-calls offering to unlock that process for a crypto fee is not the liquidator. AXT News

UK investors who lost money to Key Coin Assets Ltd are being hit with a second fraud this week: agents who claim they can unlock the winding-up for a Bitcoin invoice. The High Court wound the company up on 11 August after nine Action Fraud complainants paid more than £300,000 into a Ponzi-style crypto scheme. Investigators found no genuine trading. Funds moved into the director's personal account, often within hours. The Official Receiver is liquidator. That order closes the company. It does not put coins back in a wallet. See the winding-up itself. The follow-up pitch is older than the company. Someone impersonates the FCA, the Insolvency Service, or a "court-appointed recovery desk." They ask for a tax, a release fee, or a wallet "verification" paid in crypto. That is the scam. The FCA does not call you to collect a fee. Report Fraud does not invoice in Bitcoin.

Australia's National Anti-Scam Centre and ASIC have the same warning on their books: if you have already been scammed, and someone contacts you offering to recover the money, treat it as a scam. Hang up. Delete the email. ASIC cannot get stolen crypto back. The FCA cannot either, and it will not contact you to say it is holding your coins. The same factory floor showed up after Interpol's Jackal IV romance and investment raids: conversion agents, retention agents, then a recovery room that charges for a free petition. U.S. OneCoin and AirBit Club remission portals are live. Fake administrators are still selling those filings. See how impostors follow real DOJ programs.

What a real file looks like

Keep bank statements, chat logs, the payment references you were told to use, transaction hashes, and your Report Fraud crime number. Coins that left for wallets the director controlled, or for an offshore desk, need a wallet map and a court that can freeze what is left. That work is separate from the liquidator. Legitimate practices do not invoice in Bitcoin first, do not ask for AnyDesk, TeamViewer, seed phrases, or private keys, and do not guarantee a refund. Swiss-registered counsel such as Sarah Legal start with evidence and a forensic pack. Hong Kong-registered tracing such as aidataintelligence.io style reports are the exhibit. Without them, a pleading is a letter. Recovery is never automatic. It depends on whether the coins can still be traced to an exchange or a wallet a court can reach. For the sequence, see how crypto recovery works and why a Bitcoin invoice before a bank recovery is the scam.

Check the register before the next call

Search the FCA Firm Checker and the warning list of unauthorised firms. In Australia, report to Scamwatch and your bank first. AFCA handles complaints about financial firms, not Telegram recovery rooms. If a caller claims to be part of Jackal IV, read Interpol's own notice. The government's page, not a cloned dashboard, is the source. A winding-up, an arrest, or a remission portal can be real. The person who cold-calls you about it the same afternoon is not.
