Strategy Inc. (NASDAQ: MSTR), formerly MicroStrategy, reported a second-quarter 2026 net loss of $8.2 billion driven almost entirely by an $8.32 billion unrealized markdown on its Bitcoin holdings under fair-value accounting. Despite the paper loss, the company now holds 843,775 BTC worth approximately $54.8 billion at current prices — the largest corporate Bitcoin treasury in the world.

Accounting vs. Strategy

Fair-value accounting requires Strategy to mark its Bitcoin to market each quarter. When BTC prices decline, the company reports large paper losses even if it sells nothing. Executive chairman Michael Saylor has consistently framed the treasury as a long-term reserve asset, comparing Bitcoin to digital gold for institutional balance sheets.

The company's acquisition cost basis totals approximately $63.7 billion against a current market value near $54.8 billion. Strategy raised $17.06 billion through at-the-market stock offerings in 2026 and repurchased $1.5 billion of convertible notes at an 8% discount.

New Monetization Program

In a notable shift, Strategy sold approximately $218.4 million worth of Bitcoin under a new BTC Monetization Program to fund preferred stock dividends and shore up cash. The company had previously emphasized accumulation without sales. It also expanded its US dollar reserve to $3.75 billion, enough to cover more than two years of preferred dividend and interest payments.

Strategy established a $1 billion share repurchase authorization for MSTR common stock and repurchased roughly $25 million of STRC preferred shares at a discount. Management stated it intends to continue buying preferred securities while they trade below par.

Coinbase Custody Connection

On-chain analysis and SEC filings indicate that a substantial portion of Strategy's Bitcoin is held through Coinbase Prime Custody. Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong has stated that eight of the ten largest publicly traded corporate Bitcoin holders use Coinbase's institutional platform. Strategy designates Coinbase as its "principal market" for Bitcoin valuation in regulatory filings.

Digital Credit and Investor Scrutiny

Saylor said the company remains focused on expanding its "Digital Credit" business despite weaker Bitcoin prices. Investor scrutiny has increased over whether Strategy can sustain its complex capital structure built around multiple classes of preferred stock, common equity, and convertible debt.

For comparison, Coinbase holds 14,548 BTC as an operating company treasury — a fraction of Strategy's holdings but integrated into a $300 billion custody business. The two companies represent opposite ends of corporate crypto strategy: leveraged Bitcoin accumulation versus exchange-led institutional infrastructure.
