Gold Notches Fresh Record as Dollar Slides Before Jackson Hole

Spot gold traded above $3,480 an ounce on August 26, 2026, setting a fresh record as the dollar slipped and Treasury yields eased into this week's Jackson Hole symposium. Silver followed, and the same bid that lifted bullion has also supported Bitcoin's hold above $69,000. Both assets compete with high real rates. When those rates fall, even without a Fed cut, the bid tends to show up in both markets at once.

The immediate driver is financial conditions, not a new geopolitical shock. The U.S. Treasury's decision this month to enlarge its long-bond buybacks has taken pressure off the long end of the curve. A softer dollar has done the rest. Central-bank buying, which underpinned the spring advance covered in our May precious-metals report, remains a slower, structural bid underneath the tape.

What Jackson Hole Can Reverse

Gold's record is fragile in the usual way: it is priced for a patient Fed. A hawkish Powell speech on Friday that validates the hike debate inside the FOMC would firm the dollar and test the breakout. A speech that instead emphasises cooling labour data would likely extend the move and pull silver and platinum with it.

Physical demand has not kept pace with the futures rally. ETF holdings have risen, but jewellery offtake in India and China remains price-sensitive at these levels. That split is typical of a macro-driven spike: paper markets lead, physical markets catch up later if the dollar stay-weak thesis holds.

The Crypto Parallel

Traders have treated gold and Bitcoin as a pair trade through August for a reason. Last week's risk-on bounce, Treasury buybacks, and a weaker dollar lifted both. If Powell surprises to the hawkish side, both would likely sell together. If he does not, gold's record and Bitcoin's $70,000 test become the same story told in two asset classes.
